D-Ribose is a sugar molecule that occurs naturally in the body and is made from blood glucose. It is a vital part of adenosine triphosphate (ATP), a molecule that helps store and release energy. ATP also supports muscle contraction and your body’s nerve signals. D-Ribose is marketed as a nutritional supplement to reduce fatigue and improve athletic performance. It’s also been studied for people with heart failure.
According to a study, D-Ribose supplements may help reduce muscle soreness after exercise. In the study, 21 untrained college students assigned male at birth who took 15 grams of D-ribose an hour before and after jumping exercises, along with intervals of 12, 24, and 36 hours afterward, had less muscle soreness than those who took a placebo.
However, despite ribose’s potential benefits, there is limited scientific evidence to support its use for any health condition or as for performance enhancement.
